RE: SEPTEMBER 30 STATUTORY HOLIDAY
To all of our CPH community,
As you may know, the federal government passed legislation in June 2021 to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
As part of Clare Parker Homes commitment to recognize and support recommendation #80 in the Truth and Reconciliation Committee of Canada: Calls to Action
“We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal Peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”
On behalf of the board, Clare Parker Homes is proud to honour this day within our agency and community as a statutory holiday as of this year and in the future. This date has also been observed as Orange Shirt Day since 2013. Orange Shirts are worn as a symbol of abuse Indigenous children suffer while forced to attend residential schools.
This day provides an opportunity for each person to recognize and commemorate the impact of residential schools. This may present itself as a day of quiet reflection or participation in a community event.
Within our agency, Shyra Missens and Lisa Dennis will be hosting a book reading and storytelling by Rhonda Donais-Walsh and smudge with people. In the community, there are many events happening around Regina as well,
